In Spite (of) Linocut Print - Red/White

$45.00

On some days, we manage to press on in spite of everything. On others, the only way to move forward is purely out of spite.

I made this piece because I couldn’t stop thinking of a painting I saw of a woman sitting in bed, holding a dagger. Every myth or tale that was put forward as her potential backstory was tragic or cruel in some way. As, I suppose, stories of women tend to be. I just kept coming back to her resilience. Her anger too.

The dagger handle has a little edelweiss flower on it for courage, and was paired with laurel leaves to mean bravery in new territory.
Of course, only after choosing laurel did I end up reading about the story of Apollo (the god associated with laurel wreaths) and Daphne (the woman who was turned into a laurel tree while trying to get away from him). In some roundabout dark way, it still seemed fitting.

This colourway is a brown-ish red on white 200gsm paper. It is a limited edition of 8, and is 150mm x 180mm.

Each print is signed, dated, and numbered.

This design is currently also available in a black on light green colourway in another listing.

All of my linocuts are printed by hand, and the nature of hand made items means that there may be very minor variations between each print. I think it’s part of the charm! If there are several of a print available, the one you get may not be the exact piece from the photos, but rest assured that the one you receive is made and packed with equal love and care.
